mousetail: Sleeping mouse with a pink box (playful)

Every time it gets close to a final exam, due date of an important paper, translation overload or all of the above, I get an inkling for writing. And frankly, not the usual play-by-play recount of the day: that I do when I'm anxious, and that I do on Twitter. Now that it's broadcasted here and y'all are privy to the minutiae of my life, I want to do something different for a change.

I'd considered the idea of joining LJ Idol contest since I first learned about it: like, two years ago. But there's a deadline. And the need, although not mandated, to read what everyone else writes. I do enjoyed reading what my friends who participate have to write, but some hundred people, most of whom will produce painfully pitiful, pretentious prose? I may be no good writer, but I'm rather picky reader with little lime on my hands.

So I decided to follow Idol's prompts on my own terms and my own schedule. I might have chosen some other source of topics just as well but the tricky breadth of Idol's headlines captivates me... So here we go. Topic Zero was the intro (if you're wondering, they get more interesting starting with the next :)).

I thought about skipping this one for the sake of sparing your time. Most of you know me well enough. You know I have a soft spot for memes, as well, and those are mostly of 'all-the-stuff-about-me-you-never-wanted-to-know' kind. But for Idol, if I was to lay the ground for the future stories, I would have written my intro a bit differently, so here it goes.

There are three kinds of people that earn their living by lying: the spies (and I liberally lump in undercover agents, desk-bound analysts and all sort of folks serving Uncle Sam by nobly pretending to be someone else in this category), the writers and PR professionals (advertisers and politicians belong here too). I am neither of those, although I did at one time make living by lying. Let's say, for your peace of mind, I was a writer? ..Oh, yes, I was a writer. I was a poet, even, translating poetry from Russian into English in verse on occasion :) There's a whole host of other things I was, some briefly, some for a longer term, and just so you don't think I suffer from split personality syndrome as you read on, let me just confirm that I, indeed, was/am/have been:
- class outcast
- teacher's pet
- highschool valedictorian
- college drop-out
- straight-A student
- aspiring writer
- art student
- computer geek
- office manager
- business owner
- volunteer
- translator
- accountant
- unemployed
- in long-distance relationship
- in long-term relationship
- married
- parent
- activist
- opportunist
- conservative-turning-liberal
- yogini
- Christian Orthodox
- Evangelical
- patriot (of various countries)
- cosmopolite
- feminist
..I could have continued the list, but I think by the this point you're all convinced that I'm either a nut or a lier. The first is arguable, the second is possible, but in this LJ, even in some 'creative' entries, I have managed to say nothing but the truth so far, and I hope to keep it this way. But I am, you know, trying to be a writer now ;) - do keep that in mind.

We'll meet again, soon, as I continue to follow the prompts, and I'm sure you'll see some pages from the past and present and meet some, if not all, these people that once-were or could-have-been. I myself am looking forward, although with great anxiety, to see them again. I like the person I am now: just about 30, just about graduated with a psych degree, caring mom and faithful wife, hardworking, passionate about some causes, but sometimes a song I used to like or an author I used to read remind me of how much has changed about me... and how little I have changed.

P.S. The userpic is a picture of me. Couple of years old, but rather close still :)
